The Challenge: A thriving automotive company approached XL Logistics to assist with their time-sensitive shipments to a major OEM in Southwest Ontario. The company was struggling to find enough drivers for their cross-border freight deliveries to fulfill daily runs. Pickup points varied across Canada, and the newly implemented ELD regulations required team drivers to minimize downtime. Due to the large number of pickups, all deliveries were being run direct, resulting in significant costs for the company.
The Solution: XL Logistics leveraged its relationships with regional carriers within Canada to transport freight into the Detroit, Michigan area, utilizing a partner’s cross-dock facility on a daily basis. We recommended a daily milk run from the cross-dock with consolidated freight for direct delivery to the OEM, effectively saving costs and maximizing truck space. Additionally, we implemented an inventory system at the cross-dock to ensure all freight was accounted for before departure. XL Logistics now operates daily lanes from Canada to the cross-dock in Michigan, with a regular milk run truck collecting all freight for delivery to the OEM.
